Unattended Children Policy

The Gary Byker Memorial Library staff does much to encourage young children to visit the library. We feel that children, from the time they are very young, should experience the library as a fun place to go. It is our desire to make children’s library visits both enjoyable and memorable. However, library staff members are not expected to assume responsibility for the care of unsupervised children.
It is library policy that a parent (or designated responsible person over the age 12) accompany all children under the age of six while they are in the library.
We require a parent or designated responsible person to be in the library to meet children at the conclusion of story hour or any other library sponsored program they attend. After a 30 minute time period or at the end of the closing of the library local law enforcement officers will be summoned to deal with any unattended child.
Approved by the Gary Byker Memorial Library Board 11/23/93. Revised 04/19/2005
