The City of Hudsonville’s Barry Street Realignment project will begin Mid-August 2024. The project will shift the intersection of Barry Street and 32nd Avenue north, aligning Barry Street with Allen Street. This will create a traditional four-way intersection with a single traffic signal. The project has been designed to decrease congestion and improve safety on 32nd Avenue and the surrounding streets.
The City has contracted with Brenner Excavating and Fleis and Vandenbrink Engineering for construction and engineering respectively, with substantial completion targeted for the end of November 2024.
Starting on Barry Street, just west of Cliff Court, a new section of roadway will be constructed that curves gently to the north and then back to the west to align with Allen Street at 32nd Avenue. The existing section of Barry Street south of the creek from Cliff Court to 32nd Avenue will become a dead-end stub and renamed “Barry Court”. Barry Court will no longer intersect 32nd Avenue, and the existing traffic signal at this location will be eliminated. There will be a posted detour around the construction zone for approximately four weeks beginning in late September utilizing Beechridge Drive and Laurelwood Drive.
When asked to speak about the project, City Manager Tyler Dotson offered the following: “This project has been a long time coming and one we’re excited to get started. 32nd Avenue is a main artery into the city and its importance is vital to the community. We’re confident that this will reduce various levels of congestion and most importantly, create a safer road for vehicle and non-motorized traffic.”
The total construction for the realignment project is $1,250,000. The City of Hudsonville was awarded a $951,000 legislative earmark with support from Senator Roger Victory’s office.
